Homeless Teacher Gets Help After Former Student Recognizes Him On The Street

On his way to work, Steven Nava passed by the same car every morning. He noticed that every time he passed the car, there was someone sleeping in it. After a few weeks went by, Steven decided to check in on the person in the car. Turns out the person in the car was actually Steven's former substitute teacher, Jose Villaruel.

Jose had been working as a substitute teacher, but lost his job once all teaching went virtual. At this point he was now homeless, living in his car and collecting a social security cheque which the he sent the majority of to his sick wife in Mexico.

At this point, Steven knew he needed to help out. He started off by getting Jose a hotel room for the night and gave him $300, but he didn't stop there. Steven ended up starting a GoFundMe and put out an ask to the community to help raise funds. The GoFundMe raised a total of $27,000.

Jose, not knowing that the money was being raised, was surprised with a cheque for the full amount of $27,000. "It is an experience of my life that will be kept for the rest of my life. I carry it in my heart. I felt that something was going to happen, that things were going to change, and it happened suddenly when I least expected it." Jose says.
